CDN condemns regime’s alliance with Taliban

The Concertación Democrática Nicaragüense (CDN-Monteverde) strongly condemns the Ortega-Murillo regime’s decision to establish diplomatic relations with the Taliban group headed by the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, making Nicaragua the first country in the Americas to ally itself with this terrorist regime. This action, which aligns Nicaragua with Russia, China, Pakistan and Turkmenistan, reveals the country’s international isolation and its erratic and authoritarian foreign policy.

Approaching a government that took power by force in 2021, and that has tortured and murdered ethnic and religious minorities, represents a threat to the security of the region and a provocation to the United States. This decision could also have serious consequences for our trade and economic relations, as the United States is Nicaragua’s main trading partner and source of investment and remittances.

The Taliban regime is known for its disregard for human rights, especially against women and girls, who are forbidden to study, work and move freely. The alliance with the Taliban puts Nicaragua at risk of being considered an ally of global terrorism, which could lead to international sanctions.

The CRC-Monteverde urges the international community and governments in the region to remain vigilant, and to take action to prevent any threat to peace and security arising from this dangerous alliance.
