Central American brothers and sisters:
On Wednesday, August 28, once again the Ortega Murillo regime failed in its attempt to place one of its most connoted spokesmen, Mr. Valdrack Ludwig Jaentschke Whitaker, as Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (SICA). This attempt was neutralized by the joint action of the Nicaraguan civil society and the support of most of the governments of the SICA member countries. We are especially grateful for the valuable contribution of the foreign ministers who, by denying their support to such appointment, guaranteed this triumph.
While this is an important victory, the threat of placing Jaentschke in office remains, and with it the danger of inserting Central America into the middle of the international conflict led by Russia and China.
This pretension of the Ortega Murillo regime to use us as pawns of foreign interests, continues to be a threat that affects the entire Central American population; since this alignment would fuel geopolitical conflicts and generate more difficulties and tragedies to the society of the region.
It is up to all Central Americans, both governments and members of civil society, to maintain this joint struggle for the true interests of the region.
We call on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), business associations and other civil society organizations to redouble their efforts to continue to stop the Ortega Murillo regime’s attempts to take control of the SICA General Secretariat.
The Ortega Murillo family intends to expand and replicate to the rest of the region, the violations of freedoms and human rights committed against Nicaraguans. The defense of the values and principles that most of the governments of the region have made is important, but let us not forget that it is the citizens who suffer the crimes against humanity, torture, imprisonment, exile and even the loss of their nationality and property.
The Nicaraguan Democratic Concertation (CDN) is confident that the unity of free and democracy-loving peoples, with God’s blessing, will defend the Central America of peace, freedom and development that we all long for. Let us continue to safeguard the defense of the values of a firm and lasting peace and democracy that sustain SICA. Together we will continue to seek solutions to our regional problems and prevent foreign interests from altering our relations.
