Nicaragua is suffering the largest exodus in its history. Since 2018, more than 900 thousand Nicaraguans have left our homeland due to political persecution, banishment, prohibition to enter the country and the search for opportunities that the Ortega Murillo regime denies. Six million of us carry the burden of family separation and suffer the absence of at least one loved one.
From this site, we want to contribute to the construction of the historical memory of the feelings and longings of Nicaraguans affected by family separation, especially in this time of celebration and tradition.
How are you experiencing the separation from your family these holidays?

I came to the USA 4 years ago and so far I can say that I have achieved some stability in adapting to this new reality, so to speak, but it is inevitable to think of all that I left behind.

Seeing my family split up was very hard, especially at Christmas. In my case, there were 3 of us, but my mom passed away 7 months ago and my sister could not say goodbye to her.
I always imagine spending Christmas with my sister and even more if it was in Nicaragua, but I am sad that for now it can only be in another country.
